Alright everyone, the inevitable is almost upon me. 30. The big 3-0. The time when I say goodbye to my youthful 20s and on to a more mature and wise decade. To say that I am freaking out is an understatement. Finding those two disco ball colored strands of hair the other day didn't help things either. I know I'm probably making this into a bigger deal than it should be. I know many have gone before me and survived, but freaking out over changing decades is a rite of passage thank you very much.
In an effort to cope with the fact that yes, indeed I am aging and indeed I am not as immortal as I thought when I was 19 going on 20. I've decided to celebrate my birthday in a month long process by taking the focus off of me and my feelings and turning them into something good. My birthday is on Decemeber 28th and in the busiest month of the year I plan to do 30 Random Acts of Kindness in the community. I'm super excited about this. Like so excited I am starting to plan (not so random for this Type A Capricorn over here) many different things I can do each day in the month of December leading to my birthday.
I have a good list so far, but suggestions are welcome!
I'm going to try and blog each day/week to give updates on how it went. Not to be all, "Look at me and what I can do" but to share ideas we can all do to spread love and help make our world a better place. Please, when you read this and my future posts take me and myself out of it. It is not me doing these things. It's my faith in action. It's the Spirit working through me and in Christ's name. Everything we have is not our own so it is not me doing this, but Him working through me!
I desire to be the good and the change I want to see in the world. I can't think of a better way to ring in the next decade!

How we did this...
I'm not saying this to brag but to really enforce that this was not a fluke, this reprot is actually our second Home Energy report in a row that had these results. For Xcel customers Home Energy reports are given every three months. Our last report stated that we used less than this report. I'm chalking that up to being gone for our summer vacation for a week.
I'm sure you've all heard some of these before, so it may not be anything new. Also, I can say, these didn't always come at once. We took steps gradually to become more efficient. Another factor is we have a relatively small home. We have big gorgeous windows that let in a lot of light during the day and also work to keep the house breezy and cool in the summer.
Steps we've taken and that have worked for us:
1. Lights: Energy efficient light bulbs...everywhere. To keep costs down, buy them in bulk when they are on sale.
I found an excellent rule of thumb while reading a fiction book. RULE: Rooms that are lit up in a home should be less than or equal to the number of people in the house. So, for a family of four this means that at any given time there are only four rooms that have lights on. Usually we have less because we are most often in the room with someone else. Learning and getting used to this rule will really start to point out how often we leave lights on. Bathrooms and staircases are some of the worst!
Always use natural light when you can! Do "light checks" before you leave the house. That's my job. Dana takes the kids to the car and I run around quickly making sure everything is off and unplugged.
2. Plugs: If it's not in use it's unplugged. Start with the kitchen. Right now in our house the only items plugged in are the refrigerator and the stove. Every other item is unplugged (yes, this includes the microwave which is actually on our bar in the basement...more on this later). This one takes some getting used to, the habit doesn't come right away.
When your phone, iPad, etc is done charging. Remove the plug from the socket! Don't let it sit there all day long with no purpose besides draining tiny amounts of electricity that add up! I found through research that they can increase your monthly energy usage by 10%. That's huge for something so small. Also, be mindful of not letting your item sit fully charged for longer than it needs too.
In high energy traffic areas like home office and around the television. Use the surge power chords. Turn all items off with just a switch of the button when you are done! (Honestly, our house is still working on this one!)
Home computers running all day but not being used can really consume the energy too. In the past, we would keep ours on all day. It was so nice to jump on and jump off when I needed to. Let's be honest, waiting, even for your computer to start up, sucks when you are busy cooking dinner, wrestling your child out of their play clothes and keeping the cats from bothering each other. Now that I have an iPhone, my husband an iPod, I find that I am using our home computer less and less. Sometimes it is off for days at a time! (Never did I ever think that would happen!)
If you are going out of town, even for a night. Unplug everything that you can: including alarm clocks and wireless routers which are often missed in the "plug checks".
3. Thermostat: In the summer, when we use our air, we set it to 65-68. In the winter we keep the heat at 72-75 turning it down at night or when we leave. This takes some getting used to. If you need to do some tweaking in this area, try starting with just a degree or two at a time.We are also blessed with a wood burning insert for our fireplace. On a cold winters night we like to snuggle together in the living room in front of the fire. Popcorn, hot chocolate and our favorite adult beverage while watching Doctor Who makes for some fun family memories.
4. Appliances: Of course having energy efficient everything makes a huge difference. The switch and cost of this can take time. Around Valentine's Day, I finally gave in to my husbands persistent pleading that we buy a toaster oven to use in place of our microwave and toaster. This is when we noticed the biggest drop in our energy bill. Instead of warming up the oven for little items like pizzas, hoagies, and nachos we now use the toaster oven that uses half the time and half the energy. (I really should work for an infomercial) Now, the oven is only used for those comfort food dishes that are best heated up in the fall/winter months and baking. We LOVE our toaster oven!
Get rid of unnecessary items that use electricity. Example: We decided about a year ago that we both didn't need alarm clocks. Now, with having an alarm clock on our phones we don't really need one at all...
5. Teach Your Kids: Like every lesson, learning to change the way we live and mold new habits take time in the beginning (sometimes even stomping feet and tears). Invest that time with your kids. Don't do the work for them. If they forgot to turn a light off but now they are deep into a movie or playing? Guess what, time to pause or stop and they can go and shut the light off. At the time it seems like such a small deal. It would be so easy to just flip the switch yourself and continue on with laundry, dinner, bug slaying, etc. The goal here is to teach your kids that you will hold them accountable and maybe next time (x1,000) they will remember to shut the light off knowing they don't want to be interrupted in play later and soon it will become their habit.
Tell the Why? For a child, knowing the reason behind what you are asking them to do can make all the difference. It's not just "Big Bad Parent" mode telling them one more thing they need to do because they were told so. We do this because it helps save our family money so that we can use that money to do fun things like go out to eat. We do this because being a good stewardship of our environment and home is not just good practice, but for us a form of worshiping God who blessed us with everything we have. It teaches self-control and being aware of the effect we as humans have on our surroundings. So much more I could go on and on!!
Set a family goal for your energy usage and plan a reward if you make it!
Consider a Home Energy Audit. Sometimes these can even be done for free or very low cost so check with your energy company. We had one soon after we moved in and it really helped us to know what the problem areas of our house was and what we could do to fix it. (Still saving for those new windows *sigh*)
This is what has worked for us. I can't think of any other way to end this without sounding cheesy, so I'll leave with a quote from LeVare Burton of Reading Rainbow: "Don't take my word for it" *wink*

Watch Me Grow!
This weekend, my husband and I accomplished something that I have been wanting to do for years! We finally built our first raised garden. I was actually surprised by how very little work and cost went into it. Anyone can do this and I am so thrilled to see the results.
My Jesus look-alike with all the materials. The lumber totaled $11 and some change. Chicken wire for the bottom to keep out pesky moles was around $7.
Preparing and leveling the ground.
The chicken wire is under the cardboard. The cardboard will decompose back into the ground and while it's taking it's time doing this invasive weeds are bocked out and it was free and natural. Score!
Filling the bed with compost. Our city has an area for residents to get compost for free. Unfortunately, it was closed for the holiday weekend. My husband and I are not people. We had the time and energy to get the job done, so we paid about double what we would have. After the special topsoil was bought, we spent about $30 on "dark matter". I do have a compost pile of my own, although it is not very well maintained and has no usable "dark matter" as of late. We were both surprised at the quantity of "dark matter" we needed to fill the boxes.
All filled! We chose to go with an organic top soil that is best for vegetables. We learned that the top part should not be compacted to much. You should be able to push your finger to the third knuckle in easily.
Lastly, came the planting. What a breeze! We have a few herbs, lots of various peppers (we're a spicy family), a few different tomatoes, and my favorite: asparagus. Now the really hard part comes...the wait for nature to take it's course. We're not patient people you'll remember.
And that's it! I'll post pictures of the progress and harvest as we go! It really is a simple and enjoyable project. It's eco-friendly and will keep us eating healthy all summer long.

The Day After May Day
It is reported that Red Wing, MN received about 17 inches of snow overnight. With the snow still falling...
In May? You say!
I don't believe it! You say.
Proof. I will show you it!
In May? You say!
I don't believe it! You say.
Proof. I will show you it!
Heavy wet snow on the roof.
A view from our porch. Snowplows...in May
Heavy snow weighs down trees.
Our neighbor's solider pines bowing down to the snow.
Our back yard. Thankfully all the weighted down trees are not focused on your house.
Spring Wonderland
We lost a couple big branches.
Buds on the trees, covered in snow.
Shelter from the storm. Thankful we put Elaina's bird house up last weekend!
"I'm taking a snow day with the girls." -Something I'd never thought I'd say in May.

Happy Mayan Apocalypse Day
Every family has that child. That child that just does crazy stuff for no particular reason. Stuff that makes you late or ruins your most prized possession. That child that makes you just want to throw in the towel. That child that tests you in every way just because they can. My youngest is that child and while I love her dearly, more than my own breath, I almost lost it today.
I would like to tell you a story in a series of memes about my own mini apocalypse on this day, December 21, 2012:
Because school is out I had to take my youngest to work with me...
She was really good until it was almost time to go and she stumbled across the bucket of rock salt we keep in the entryway...
And was all:
Then she comes up to me and tells me what she did as if it was as normal as getting dressed in the morning:
I had seen her in the entryway so I knew what she did, but I was angry and baffled so I still had to ask...
I ran to the entry way, which now looked something like this...
Me:
Child #2:
Me: Complete silence. I was so mad I couldn't even yell. That's when she knew it was bad.
Child #2:
So I did. Of course. I cooled off while cleaning up the mess and was even able to see some humor in the whole thing. So I made this post. Why she found it necessary to dump a bucket of rock salt all over the floor and spread it around will continue to baffle generations for years to come.
Happy Mayan Apocalypse Day to you all. Hold your babies close and love them, even when they are mischievous. We are so blessed!

Back to Blogging
I need to get back here more often.
Reading too many books lately...wait can there ever be enough books? Time to pimp a series? Okay:
Check out "Dresden Files" by Jim Butcher. I had the pleasure to meet Butcher a few years ago. He has wit and he has nerdy humor that carries throughout the series. Harry Dresden kept me company during 7 weeks of bed rest and continues to give me that "warm cozy" feeling you feel when you return to a series.
Book #14 "Cold Days" just came out a few weeks ago. Excellent! The series won't disappoint.
ALSO: THE HOBBIT!! FOUR MORE DAYS!! Richard Armitage :g I can hardly contain my glee.

Pinterest Inspiration
Pinterest has inspired me to make many crafty things on my own. It's a fantastic place to get ideas and this year I decided to home make gifts for teachers and our moms.
Teacher Gifts:

I must confess, I'm not an expert knitter. I'm just starting to get my feet wet on this whole new avenue, so I made these pretty simple. It's just a basic knit stitch over and over until it was long enough to fold over. Then I sewed the two sides together and slapped a button on them. For presentation, I got three empty coffee cups and taped a gift card to the coffee place on top!
Mother Gifts:

These are the yarn wreaths I made for my mom, mother-in-law, and step mom. They are thinner than your normal yarn wreath, but I'm happy with the way they turned out. I bought the wreath at the dollar store and then took three different colors of yarn and wrapped around until my arm was about to fall off. Then I followed a very easy tutorial on how to make felt flowers. I can't WAIT to give them to the moms!
I've been trying so many ideas from Pinterest and I hope to blog about all of them. Some have worked wonderfully while others have been disasters. Stay tuned!

Happy St. Nick!!
What a cultural change moving from Wisconsin to Minnesota! One would think since the states our neighbors, that they have a lot in common, but the heritages are very different. I grew up in Southeastern Wisconsin an area a large amount of German immigrants found attractive. Many of my friends and relatives celebrate St. Nick which is on the night of Dec. 5th he comes and fills your stockings with oranges, apples, peanuts, chocolate and little presents. Today, my Facebook page BLEW UP with friends back home describing how St. Nick went for them and their families. My friends in Minnesota are silent, today is just another day to them, and they're all turning their heads wondering what is up with this peculiar holiday.
Minnesota has a large Scandinavian population. So, color me surprised when I found out that next to no one here knows what St. Nick Day is all about and why we celebrate it. It was off to the trusty computer for research in order to gain knowledge on exactly what this day means.
Low and behold! I find out that it is actually a precursor to Santa Claus! In our house the two holidays and gift giving old men were very separate. I think it was my mum's Catholic roots and German influence that kept the holidays separte. St. Nick was just that a saint. He was Turkish and lived from 280-343. He went around putting coins in people's shoes when they weren't looking (hence treats in stockings). December 6th is known as St. Nicolas Day and so even though mainstream has combined the holidays, we keep it separate in our home, and we can explain the tradition to our Viking neighbors.

All I can say is that, "It's about time!" Occupy Wall Street
As I sit in the slowly decreasing temps of southeastern Minnesota, I'm wishing more than anything that I could be in NYC with the protesters on Wall Street. It's about time the voice of the 99% was heard! The 99% has woken up! These are not Hippie slackers with long hair, they are mothers, fathers, grandparents, college students, the old that support the young, the young that have the most to lose!
Ways you too can join in and stand with the 99%:
1. Spread the word. Everyone. Twitter, Facebook, Blogging, Flicker, etc. Don't stop!
2. Donate money to the cause here: Cultural Revolution is our business. Want to join?
3. If you're in NYC or can get to NYC go! Even for a day and join with the other protesters.
The time for change has come!
Word:
"Many tend to forget that Jesus was ordered to be executed because he was confronting both the state and the religious institutions. It was after his overturning of the money changer's tables that the rabbis and Pharisees went to the Roman governor."

Revolutions Invoke Change!

Stop and smell the flowers...
I feel like that is what I've been doing these last few months. Stopping to enjoy life as it comes which in turn takes me away from being sucked into the internet and all it holds. Okay, maybe not all it holds. My Pinterest and Twitter apps on the iPod make it pretty easy to surf while I'm chillin' on the couch.
I stopped in to edit my profile information, so I thought I would say, "Hello!"
Here are some pictures of life in the last month or so:
Seriously. Life has been so good and it has been what we've made it be. Peace and Love to you all!

Pintrest Inspiration!
If you haven't checked this website out yet: Pinterest GO CHECK IT OUT!! ---WAIT don't leave yet...check it out after my post or you may never come back!! The site is just that good.
I've been very inspired lately by the different crafts, fashion, recipes, etc I've found on this site. It's the best of the best in the internet world. Recently, I tried a rainbow cake recipe that someone had pinned. The original recipe can be found here: Omnomicon makes: how to make a rainbow cake!
The author of the blog does a fantastic job detailing each step of the recipe. I followed her instructions step by step, only I didn't use the fat free version. I used the box recipe with oil and eggs.
Here's how mine turned out:
Mix up the white cake mix (2 boxes) and separate into six different bowls...
Using the gel colors mix your colors until you got the desired brightness. This will take some time and your wrist may get sore. I found purple the hardest color to get right...
Using the same instructions on the original post "blob" your colors in rainbow order...and bake according to box instructions.
Take out and frost. I used "Rainbow Chip" frosting and folded in about 4oz of Cool Whip. It makes the frosting go further and is easier to spread...
TADA!! You're very own gnarly psychedelic rainbow cake!
Although, a bit labor intensive (mostly the dishes) this cake was a lot easier than what I thought it would be. I'd like to try it next with cupcakes!

Goal for August
Woah...life got busy there for a bit, but what's new??
I kind of went on a big summer vacation and fell into the comfortable sunny routine of ignoring the blog, housework and anything else that keeps me indoors and lounging at the pool with my younglings.
I have a goal for August: TO START BLOGGING MORE!!! There's this GBE 2 blogging challenge that I have been dancing around the edges of without really participating in. The plan is to start up with that and see how it goes. Stay tuned...

May the Fourth be with you all!
Happy May the Fourth!!
A holiday for all Star War fans around the world!
I first discovered Star Wars with my babysitter's sons who were in love with it. I was pretty young and just willing to go along since they said I could be the princess. :) It wasn't until years later when the digital remastered versions came out that I really fell in love with the series. For most of my junior high days (on the nights I wasn't watching Buffy) I would play through the series picking up where I left off the night before and then repeat. Yeah, Geek. I wear it proud!
Then the prequels came out and I was SO EXCITED BECAUSE OMG LUKE AND LEIA's MOM AND DAD...but then they kind of sucked and that was sad. What are your thoughts on Episodes I-III?
In college, I was into the books written on what happened after Episode VI. Luke's marriage and child, Han/Leia's three children, etc.
There's always that warm fuzzy feeling for Star Wars and Harry Potter. It's like going home after being away for a long time.
Don't forget to tell everyone "May the Fourth be with you" today!

Zyzzyva
Z is for Zyzzyva
Zyzzyva a fun word to say yes? Zyzzyva was the name of the biannual literary magazine that my high school published each school year. It was one of my first exposores to reading materials other than books. In a time before internet, I was in grade school and had a cousin in high school as a babysiter. She came home one day with this large spiral bound book that contained a collection of poems and short stories written by her classmates. I was fascinated as I paged through from cover to cover. I vowed to myself that some day I would put a story or two in there.
Years later I was in the advanced creative writing class, one of my all time favorite classes, where part of the requirement was to submit a couple items to be published in Zyzzyva. I went on to submit items in three different publications of the literary magazine. I suppose you could say this is where I got my first exposure as a mass produced writer.
Confession: To this day, about ten years after I have graduated, I still use the Zyzzyva website. It has some very handy creative writing tools in the reference section. Although, I'm pretty sure it hasn't been updated in awhile.
I was planning on sharing a couple samples of my early work, as embarrassing as it may be, but I think my old copies are far away at my mum's.
-We made it! Thank you so much to all have took the time to read my posts and comment. I've tried to make it to each of your blogs and return the favor with following. Yesterday
Y is for Yesterday
In our house "Yesterday" means any day that happened before the current day. On any given one my children, while having a memory flashback, can be heard saying, "Mama remember yesterday when we went on the train for a really long time to get to the mountains?" and then the next moment will be, "Mama remember yesterday when we were at our old house and we put all our boxes in that big big truck and moved to our new house?" and later that same day we'll here, "Mama remember yesterday when I helped you in the kitchen and we made chocolate chip cookies?"
WOW! We went to Montana on a train, moved to a new house, and baked cookies all in one day! I knew I was a good multitasker but this is pushing a bit far. ;)
Staying with our family theme of "Yesterday" as any day in the past here are a few pictures of things that happened yesterday...
Yesterday, when I matched my outfits to appliances
Yesterday, when my step-dad and I would make silly faces together
Yesterday, when we visited the new Brewer Stadium!
Yeterday, when I was in high school celebrating New Years with my two best friends
Yesterday, when I married the most wonderful man and love of my life. With flowers in my hair
Yesterday, when my BFF and I were both pregnant with our first children
Yesterday, when I was a new mom to a beautiful preemie filled with a little fear and a lot of excitement!
Yesterday, when I had my second beautiful preemie
Yesterday, The Fantastic Four smiled took a break from superhero duties to pose for a picture
When I look back to Yesterday, I count my blessings and am so thankful for all the trials and triumphs. Life is beautiful and I'm so happy for the people I share it with. Have a great day!
