Green Living

G is for Green Living

If there is one thing that I am really passionate for in life, aside from faith and family, it is Green Living. I'm constantly looking for new ways to improve our lives and the earth around us by living more sustainably. It's instinct really. We as humans didn't start out by driving our SUVs to the local super store and stock piling weeks worth of food. I still do this on a monthly basis, but I'm talking about learning how to slowly cut that process out by becoming more sustainable and green. If you're looking to start the path of green living here are some great starter steps: Five Easy Ways to Save Money While "Going Green"

Buying locally grown fruits and veggies or growing our own, has been my recent challenge. My city has a fantastic Farmer's Market and now that the weather is getting warming, I'm just itching for it to reopen. Last year, when we first moved into our home, the challenge was learning how to compost and following through with it. We've been able to reduce our waste by a bag or more of garbage each week! Then came learning how to clean more greenly and I'm not talking about those pricey "green" cleaners you can buy in stores. Here are some of my favorites: Natural Cleaning Agents I Can't Live Without. Soon after moving into our house we discovered that it was not energy efficient. At all. We had a weatherizing audit and were able to take several steps to make our home more efficient. I wrote about them here: Weatherize Your Home for Winter.

I'm continually trying to instill earth friendly habits in my children as well. Here are two articles I've written on how to get your children more involved in the recycling process: Educating Your Children About Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling and Five Earth Day Crafts for Children.

So, a lot of shameless promotion of my work today. I know. This is something I'm just so passionate about and since I already wrote on many of these topics it seems redundant to repeat it here. Hope you enjoy some or all of my articles and I hope it inspires you!

If you have any tips or similar articles please share below. I love the free flow of information that blogs can offer! Have a great day!

  1. You are an inspiration to people like me who, until recently, knew only the very basics of going green! I love the articles you wrote, they are really useful!

  2. We have a compost pile for our garden and I know that saves a lot of trash. I love fresh foods--they're delicious. Our garden exploded with tomatoes last year. We only planted six tomato plants, but there were seeds in the compost and we ended up with at least a hundred tomato plants. It was like a tomato forest. We did a ton of canning and still have spaghetti sauce left--it was good to have during the winter. We've tried to take little steps toward things like this--recycling, etc.

  3. I am so glad you shared these links!
I am a huge supporter of local farmer markets! I buy all my produce from our local market and have made great friends with the people there. I live in a community with a strong Amish presence and enjoy the wisdom they share.

I also want to eliminate chemical cleaners from my home without buying 'green' cleaners. I'm slowly working on it, but it's hard because I am a bit of a germophobe. One step at a time, though!

  4. Yes, I love going to the Farmer's Market in our town. I wish I could garden more, but it's just not feasible. I manage a few tomato and pepper plants, but that's about it. Good post on going green. It all matters.

  5. I stay green as much as I can. I hate aerosols and perfumes, so clean and freshen the air with vinegar.

I'll be growing some of my own vegetables and of course my girls in the backyard give me all the eggs I could want, as well as scarf up scraps that would normally be thrown in the trash.

Popping in by way of the A-Z Challenge. I’m blogging at:

  6. We try to live as naturally as possible, raising our own food and chickens for he eggs. We have goats who we use to clear brush and "trim the grass" in areas where it is difficult to mow. Love the idea of your blog and I'm following it now.
